As of 2015, the state of California has decided to get rid of all plastic bags that are given out at the grocery store or places like target. I did notice that some stores are still giving out these plastic bags but that is only until they finish up what they have on hand. I do have a few reusable bags from Trader Joe's and Costco, but why not crochet my own? So I revised a pattern that I posted from August 2012, for a small crochet market bag and made another bag that is a little larger and has a different handle. The great thing about these bags is that you make them any color you want or use a combination of colors! These bags can roll up so they fit in your purse, just in case you need to run by the store or the farmers market.
This Medium bag measures 13” X 11” (33cm x 28cm) not including the handle
The small bag measures 11” X 12” (28cm x 30.5 cm) not including the handle
All of these bags are made out of cotton yarn so they are durable and can be thrown in the washer and dryer.
You can find the patterns for both of these bags in the pattern section of my blog or by clicking this link. Below is a tutorial for making the handle of the medium bag.
Join yarn to top side of bag
Join yarn to top side of bag
sc in the next 6 sc (make sure the handle is placed evenly on both sides of the bag), ch 1, turn
*sc in the next 6 sc, ch1, turn, Repeat from * until the handle is the desired length.
Join handle to other side of bag, attaching it using sc, making sure to sc through the handle and the side of the bag, finish off
After attaching the handle make sure to leave a long tail to sew the handle together and create a finished edge around the opening of the bag
Fold the handle in half and whipstitch it together
Once the handle is sewn together whip stitch around the opening of the purse to create a finished edge
Here is the finished bag
Crochet on,
Da
